Start with one real receipt
Compare the same restaurant, items and portion sizes for delivery and pickup. Use the final receipt rather than a promotion banner. Check what tax, discounts and tips each total includes.
Delivery charges vary. DoorDash’s official fee guide lists delivery and service fees, along with other charges that may apply. Its payment terms also explain that app menu prices may differ from a restaurant’s other prices. Check your own checkout rather than assuming a fixed percentage.
| Part of the order | Amount |
|---|---|
| Comparable meal baseline | $25 |
| Delivery fee | $3 |
| Service fee | $3 |
| Tip | $4 |
| Menu price difference | $2 |
| Delivery extras | $12 |
| Total delivery order | $37 |
This example assumes the same baseline tax treatment, no discounts and no membership charge. Add any further delivery-specific charge or tax difference to extras when estimating your own order.
See what repetition changes
At two orders per week, 52 weeks means 104 orders a year. With these example inputs:
- Food spending: $25 × 104 = $2,600 per year.
- Delivery extras: $12 × 104 = $1,248 per year, or $104 per average month.
- Combined spending: $37 × 104 = $3,848 per year, or about $320.67 per average month.
The $3,848 total is not all delivery premium. You would still need a meal if you stopped ordering delivery.
Compare delivery with pickup fairly
Suppose the same meal costs $25 for pickup and collecting it adds $2 in travel or parking costs. Pickup costs $27 versus $37 delivered: a $10 difference per order. Replacing all 104 example orders would reduce cash spending by $1,040 a year, rather than the full $1,248 of delivery extras.
Use the pickup total you would actually pay, including any pickup fees or tip you choose. If you replace just one order each week, this example’s difference is $10 × 52 = $520 per year. Consider travel time, accessibility and convenience separately; the food delivery calculator does not price those factors.
Enter your numbers without counting markup twice
- Open the Food Delivery Cost Calculator.
- Enter your average delivery orders per week.
- In Extra cost per order, combine fees, tip, markup and other delivery-specific differences.
- In Meal price per order, enter the comparable meal baseline. If you included markup in extras, leave that same markup out of the meal amount.
- Tap Calculate to see monthly spending, yearly spending and yearly delivery extras.
Set meal price to zero if you only want to examine extras. Use an average of several receipts if orders vary. The tool uses your inputs and 52 weeks per year; it does not fetch live app prices or automatically compare pickup.
Account for memberships and discounts
A $0 delivery fee does not necessarily mean $0 in extras. DoorDash’s DashPass guidance describes waived delivery fees and reduced service fees on eligible orders, subject to its conditions.
Use the fees you actually paid after discounts. The calculator has no separate membership field: add your annual membership cost to the annual result separately, counting it once. For a household membership used for other purchases too, decide how much belongs to food delivery before comparing alternatives.
