How to use this calculator
Enter round-trip miles and hours for one workday, plus days per week. The optional time value is a comparison amount, not money you pay.
Enter 0 if a cost does not apply. Optional fields may stay blank.
Fuel plus the selected maintenance and wear estimate, based on 52 weeks per year. Your optional time value is shown separately in the results above.
What your results mean
Fuel and maintenance/wear are estimates. The optional value of time is shown separately because it is a user-selected comparison value, not money you literally pay for the commute.
A commute has a vehicle budget and a time commitment
This tool estimates fuel and a per-mile maintenance/wear allowance, then shows travel hours separately. If you enter an hourly time value, it also creates a combined comparison figure. Keeping those measures distinct prevents an assigned value of time from being mistaken for a cash bill.
Choose inputs that match your situation
Count both directions once
A 15-mile trip to work and 15-mile trip home means 30 round-trip miles. Do the same for hours. Use typical traffic, not just the fastest journey, if that better matches your routine.
Reflect hybrid schedules
Enter days you actually commute, not all paid workdays. This version uses 52 weeks and caps commute days at seven per week. To reflect 46 commuting weeks with five days each, an averaged input of 230 ÷ 52 days weekly represents 230 annual trips; rounding that input changes the estimate slightly.
Use a fuel and wear estimate you understand
Use a representative MPG and the fuel price you pay, in miles and gallons. The $0.10, $0.20 and $0.30 wear choices are simple planning assumptions, not official reimbursement rates or a prediction for your vehicle. They exclude fuel. Do not add fuel twice.
How the results are calculated
Annual commute days = weekly days × 52. Annual miles = round-trip miles × annual days. Fuel = annual miles ÷ MPG × gas price; wear = annual miles × selected per-mile allowance. Vehicle total = fuel + wear; monthly vehicle equivalent = total ÷ 12. Annual hours = daily round-trip hours × annual days. Optional time value = hours × entered hourly value.
Worked examples you can try
The starting commute
30 miles, five days weekly, 25 MPG, $4.25 gas and $0.20 per mile wear produce 7,800 annual miles. Fuel is $1,326, wear is $1,560 and the vehicle total is $2,886 yearly or $240.50 monthly. One hour daily produces 260 yearly hours, equivalent to 32.5 eight-hour days.
Three commute days
With the same distance and costs but three days weekly, the vehicle estimate is $1,731.60 yearly and travel time is 156 hours. The change is $1,154.40 and 104 hours annually.
Assign a time value
At the original five-day commute, entering $20 per hour adds an assigned $5,200 yearly time value. The combined comparison becomes $8,086. Only $2,886 is the modeled vehicle amount; $5,200 is not a cash payment.
Read the result with its assumptions
The vehicle estimate excludes parking, tolls, insurance, loan payments and other fixed ownership expenses. A wear allowance can include maintenance-related costs; check for overlap before combining this result with True Car Cost.
The time comparison does not predict income you could earn by reclaiming those hours. Eight-hour-day equivalents describe the amount of time, not paid leave. This gasoline model does not calculate electric charging; zero MPG makes fuel and the vehicle total unavailable.
Questions about this calculator
Do I enter one-way miles?
No. Enter the complete outward and return journey for one commute day.
Is the wear rate an official mileage rate?
No. It is a selectable planning allowance that excludes fuel.
Why is time value shown separately?
An assigned hourly value helps compare choices but is not a cash expense.
Will my entries be saved?
This version does not create a saved scenario. Reloading or Reset clears your entries. The graph returns to a clearly labelled illustrative example. Calculations run on the page; advertising services are described in the Privacy Policy.
Compare different commutes and job scenarios
Pro is planned to save commute scenarios so you can compare distance, vehicle expense, time and related results alongside tools such as True Hourly Pay.
